Like all generations of the VW Golf, the VW Golf I already featured a number of model variants. Among these was the Golf GTI, equipped with a significantly more powerful engine. In mid-1976, this sporty variant was launched with the 81 kW (110 hp) engine from the Audi 80 GTE, far surpassing all comparable compact cars in terms of power. It could easily compete with a Ford Escort RS 2000 or an Opel Kadett GT/E, both with a displacement over 25% greater.

The 1979 GTI variant used here as a Cobi model still had a displacement of 1.6 liters. In the last year of production of the first generation, in 1983, the engine displacement of the GTI version was increased to 1.8 liters, resulting in better torque and engine speed. The current eighth-generation GTI versions are equipped with highly efficient 2.0-liter TSI engines, producing up to 235 kW (320 hp).
